Streak-Free Window Cleaning Tips

Streaky windows are one of the most frustrating cleaning results — you put in the effort and still end up with smears. The good news is that streak-free windows are entirely achievable with the right technique and tools.

Why Streaks Happen

Streaks are usually caused by soap residue, cleaning in direct sunlight (which dries the solution too fast), using the wrong cloth, or simply wiping in inconsistent directions.

What You Need

  • A squeegee (the most effective tool for streak-free results)
  • Microfibre cloths or a chamois leather
  • A bucket with warm water and a small drop of washing-up liquid
  • A lint-free cloth for edges and corners

Step-by-Step Technique

  • Clean on a cloudy day — sunlight dries the solution too quickly and leaves streaks
  • Mix warm water with just a small drop of washing-up liquid
  • Use a microfibre cloth or soft scrubber to loosen dirt first
  • Apply your squeegee from top to bottom in overlapping strokes
  • Wipe the squeegee blade with a dry cloth between each stroke
  • Use a lint-free cloth to clean up any drips along the edges

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using paper towels — they leave lint and fibres behind
  • Using too much soap — this creates more residue
  • Cleaning in circular motions — this spreads the dirt
  • Spraying directly onto the glass and wiping immediately

When to Call a Professional

Exterior windows above ground floor level, large commercial glass frontages, and conservatory roofs are best left to professionals who have the right equipment and safety training to do the job properly.
